Humorous depiction of several festivals, seasonal customs and professions in Japan.

Pen-and-ink drawing and watercolour painting of the Maruyama school. Very skilfully worked out painting on paper.

Signature: Raishô, seal: Raishô.

Artist: Nakajima Raishô (1796-1871)

Colours a little bit faded, just a few creases. Very nice mounting made of brown brocade.

Size of the picture: 125 x 55 cm; size of the scroll: 198 x 71 cm.

€ 2.280,-

The groups or single persons winding their way through the picture are illustrating: New Years customs, dancers, street singers and travelling entertainers, people selling drinks or redish, an old samurai with his servants, a Buddhist priest under a flowering plum tree, a Shinto priest with a rooster. Farmers are planting rice, digging out a huge Taro plant or are harvesting tea leaves. In the upper part Bodhidharma (Daruma) with a red cape is sitting inbetween the people oddly untouched from the hustle and bustle around him.

Nakajima Raishô (1796-1871) was one of the „four great masters of Kyoto“ during his time. He was the teacher of Kawabata Gyokushô and of Kôno Bairei. Pictures by Raishô can be seen at the MFA Boston, National museum Kyoto and at other palces. Compare Roberts pp 127, Mitchell p 131.
