Gosho-Ningyo
Round-headed,
portly, and delightfully looking
boy-dolls, which quite often portray
a hero or a mythological figure
from a No- or Kabuki-drama. These
very special dolls always had
been popular presents of the
lords (daimyo) visiting the
shogun or emperor. Gosho-Ningyos
were kept in a special
room, the Gosho (= respectable
place). |

Kimekomi-Ningyo
Round-headed,
portly boy-dolls, first carved out
of willow, later on moulded
from a wooden mass, provided
with deep grooves, and valuably
dressed in silk and brocade. The
first Kimekomi dolls were made
end of the 18th century. The
elegantly dressed little noblemen
and gods, mostly portrayed after
lucky figures, were used as
talismen. |

Ichimatsu-Ningyo Friendship
and Toy Dolls
Called
after a famous Kabuki actor
from the 18th century. First
made in Edo (Tokyo).
They portray little Japanese girls and boys with their silk holiday kimonos. Rich
people often let them make after
the portraits of their children.
Mostly they were kept in a glass
box. Therefore they often look completely
as good as new even after decades. |
